El Sierra Club Insta a la Eliminación del Filibusterismo Parlamentario en Su Estado Actual

Washington, DC — La Comisión de Reglas y Administración del Senado aprobó anoche la S.1, la Ley Para El Pueblo, y la envió al pleno para su votación final. 

 

La Ley para el Pueblo es un histórico proyecto de reforma democrática diseñado para crear la inscripción automática y en el mismo día de votantes en todo el país, el refuerzo de las leyes anticorrupción para reducir la influencia de contaminadores corporativos, el fin de los mapas políticos partidistas, la restauración de los derechos de votante para 1,7 millones de exconvictos, etc.

 

Durante las audiencias de la comisión, senadores republicanos usaron argumentos racistas y mentiras en su intento de agregar decenas de enmiendas para debilitar la iniciativa y entorpecer el proceso. Al tiempo que la propuesta avanza hacia el pleno del Senado, se espera que los republicanos usen el filibusterismo parlamentario para bloquear la aprobación de esta iniciativa de derechos civiles. Durante la Era de Jim Crow, el filibusterismo se usó para bloquear legislación de derechos civiles, incluyendo el bloqueo de propuestas ampliamente populares para eliminar impuestos ilegales a votantes negros, acabar con los linchamientos e impulsar los derechos de los estadounidenses negros. Este comportamiento lo vemos repetido hoy.

 

 

“El Sierra Club insta al Senado a acabar con el filibusterismo parlamentario en su estado actual. Si vamos a avanzar, expandir y proteger los derechos de cada uno, tenemos que erradicar las herramientas usadas para mantener la supremacía blanca, incluyendo el filibusterismo racista.

 

“La excepcional participación electoral de 2020 exigió el cambio y el progreso. Nos hemos expresado y ya es hora de que el Senado implemente reformas audaces, democráticas y transformadoras que creen un sistema inclusivo, equitativo y justo. La voluntad popular tiene que tomarse en serio y no reprimirla por medio de politiqueos caprichosos.

 

“Todas las personas tienen el derecho a beber agua limpia, respirar aire limpio y sentirse libres de ejercer sus derechos democráticos. Por generaciones, el filibusterismo racista ha bloqueado este progreso. No vamos a permitir que permanezca este impedimento, por lo cual, el Sierra Club se une a millones de estadounidenses para instar al Senado a que no permita que reglas arcaicas y racistas se impongan en el camino al progreso”.

Sierra Club Calls For Eliminating The Filibuster As It Currently Exists
Celebrates The For The People Act Advancing to Senate Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Late yesterday, the Senate Rules and Administration Committee advanced S.1, the For the People Act, to the floor for a final vote. The For The People Act is a landmark democracy reform package that is designed to create nationwide automatic and same day voter registration, strengthen anti-corruption laws to curb the influence of corporate polluters, put an end to partisan gerrymandering, restore voting rights for 1.7 million formerly incarcerated people, and more.
 
Over the course of the hearing, Senate Republicans peddled racist claims and lies while seeking to attach dozens of amendments intended to weaken the legislation and bog down the process. As the landmark legislation heads to the Senate floor, Republicans are expected to now exploit the dated filibuster rule to block the passage of the modern-day civil rights bill. During the Jim Crow era, the filibuster was used as a tool to block civil rights legislation, including widely-supported bills to ban poll taxes, end lynching, and advance the rights of Black Americans. This pattern is still repeated today.
 
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement:
 
“The Sierra Club calls on the Senate to eliminate the filibuster as it currently stands. If we are to progress, to expand and protect everyone’s rights, we must root out the tools used to uphold white supremacy, including the Jim Crow filibuster.
 
“The American people voted in droves during the 2020 election, demanding change and pushing for progress. We have spoken and it's past time for the Senate to implement bold transformational democracy reforms that create an inclusive, fair and just system. The will of the people must be taken seriously, not squashed by political whims.
 
“Every person has the right to drink clean water, to breathe clean air, and to be free to exercise their democratic rights. For generations, the Jim Crow filibuster has blocked this progress from being realized. We will not permit this impediment to remain any longer, which is why the Sierra Club joins with millions across the country in calling on the Senate to not let arcane, racist rules stand in the way.”
