WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today,  President Biden will sign an executive order to create a new bipartisan Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court. According to the announcement, over the next 180 days, the Commission will study “the genesis of the reform debate; the Court’s role in the Constitutional system; the length of service and turnover of justices on the Court; the membership and size of the Court; and the Court’s case selection, rules, and practices.” The study will also include public meetings to solicit views of additional experts.

In response, the Sierra Club’s Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight release the following statement:

“The Sierra Club applauds President Biden in taking this critical step to meaningfully examine the role and institution of the Supreme Court for the first time in decades. As we well know, the Supreme Court and the judiciary at large play a major role in deciding cases that affect the lives and futures of people across the country. We look forward to seeing the outcomes from this Commission and working with our allies to ensure an equitable and just judicial system for all who call this country home.”
