Washington, D.C. -- On Monday, 10 people were tragically killed in a mass shooting while at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. According to authorities, the suspect was apprehended at the site of the crime and has been charged with 10 counts of murder in the first degree. Cases of gun violence are on the rise as the country begins to reopen in accordance with public health and safety policies.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune and Sierra Club Colorado Chapter Executive Committee Chair Karen Dike released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club joins the nation and the Boulder community in mourning the innocent lives stolen during yet another senseless mass shooting in our country. Whether it’s at a massage parlor or at the grocery store, all people deserve to go about their daily lives free from the fear of gun violence.
“Thoughts and prayers alone do not suffice. Empty rhetoric is not enough. We are proud to join the overwhelming majority of the public who demand an immediate end to senseless gun violence. Every single one of us, regardless our race, our gender, our background, or our zip code must be able to exist without fearing for our lives or the lives of our loved ones. Whether it’s gun reform or climate action, our elected officials must craft holistic legislation that puts our lives first.”
