WASHINGTON, DC – Today, FedEx announced that its delivery fleet will be made up of 100 percent electric vehicles by 2040, which will include benchmarks along the way, such as 50 percent EV purchases by 2025.
Last-mile delivery vehicles are primed for electrification. A switch to electric delivery trucks will cut climate pollution, as well as benefit the health of FedEx workers and neighborhood residents by slashing their exposure to toxic tailpipe pollution. Additionally, it will help FedEx reduce fuel and maintenance costs.
This announcement comes just a week after Donald Trump-appointed United States Postal Service Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced a 10-year, $485-million contract for new mail trucks, only contemplating 10 percent as electric vehicles.
In response to the FedEx announcement, Gina Coplon-Newfield, Director of Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign, released the following statement:
“The momentum to electrify delivery trucks is on, and we urge FedEx to move as quickly as possible to get to a 100% electric fleet. FedEx trucks pass through neighborhoods across the nation, making this announcement an important step towards better air quality and climate action.
“This is a critical moment to shift the status quo of the US delivery truck. We urge all delivery companies — including USPS — to not let it pass them by.”
