WASHINGTON, D.C - The Biden Administration announced a far reaching wind energy plan today that will dramatically expand the development of offshore wind farms off the United States’ East Coast to create jobs, protect the environment, and combat the climate crisis.

In response, Al Armendariz, the Senior Director of Federal Campaigns for Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement not only shows the seriousness of the Biden Administration’s commitment to our country’s clean energy economy, but also how far clean energy has come in just ten years. America is shifting away from coal at a record rate, and now stands on the precipice of a dynamic, new clean energy industry along its East Coast with the potential to create thousands of good jobs.

“Moving forward, however, it’s important that we keep our eyes fixed squarely on the implementation of this plan -- particularly on whether equity and respect for local communities and industries is present. We urge the Biden Administration, responsible wind energy companies, and civic organizations to work together to make sure our burgeoning offshore wind industry protects the environment and works for everyone moving forward. We need to make sure no one gets left behind and that the end result is something everyone can take pride in.”
