WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following Congresswoman Nita Lowey’s retirement announcement, House Democrats elected Representative Rosa DeLauro to take her place as Chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

Congresswoman Lowey became the first woman to lead the House Appropriations Committee in January of 2019, and has since been a leading figure in all government spending negotiations. Representative DeLauro has served in Congress for 30 years representing Connecticut’s 1st District, and is poised to further Representative Lowey’s agenda in fighting for the interests of the American people in the spending process.

In response, Sierra Club Deputy Director of Legislative and Administrative Advocacy, Kirin Kennedy, released the following statement:

“Sierra Club offers our deepest thanks to Representative Lowey for the bold leadership she has shown as Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee. During her time as chairwoman, she consistently fought for fairness in the annual spending process, using her position to advance equity and counterbalance the wasteful spending priorities of the Trump administration. We are incredibly grateful for her service.”

“Further, we extend strong support for Representative DeLauro, who will take up the mantle of continuous leadership in Congressional budget negotiations to come. Rep. DeLauro has been a consistent champion in the House, and we look forward to continuing to work with her to ensure just and equitable spending to protect our rights to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities.”
