El Senado Republicano Rechaza Exigir Responsabilidades a Trump por Insurrección

Washington, DC — El Senado republicano impidió hoy que la Cámara Alta llegara a la mayoría de dos tercios requerida para condenar a Donald Trump por incitar a la insurrección con intención de derrocar los resultados de las elecciones. 

 

Pese a pruebas irrefutables y la mayoría del público a favor de condenar a Donald Trump por su responsabilidad en la insurrección del 6 de enero —la cual se cobró la vidas de al menos cinco personas, causó cientos de heridos, y puso en peligro las vidas de infinidad de congresistas y del vicepresidente Mike Pence— los senadores republicanos priorizaron sus intereses políticos en lugar de los del país.

 

 

“Pese a los esfuerzos de la mayoría de los senadores republicanos, Donald Trump es y para siempre será un traidor a este país y una amenaza a nuestra democracia. La democracia requiere justicia. La democracia está basada en la justicia.

 

“Que la mayoría de los senadores republicanos priorice su partido en lugar de su juramentación constitucional es un nuevo peligroso paso para declararse el partido de la supremacía blanca, de extremistas y de devoción total a Donald Trump. Un cuerpo legislativo está lejos de cumplir con sus expectativas cuando la mitad de sus miembros está más preocupada por su futuro político que por exigir responsabilidades a quienes fomentaron un mortal ataque contra nuestra nación. Su decisión establece un peligroso precedente, lo cual prueba que tenemos que asegurarnos de que esto nunca vuelva a ocurrir.

 

“El resultado de este juicio ni puede ni tiene que ser el fin de exigir responsabilidades por la insurrección. Donald Trump, y los congresistas que apoyaron e instigaron este fallido golpe de estado, tienen que responder al pueblo estadounidense por sus crímenes contra nuestro país. Se tiene que actuar decisivamente para asegurarnos de que Donald Trump jamás volverá a ser parte del gobierno y que cualquier congresista que ayudara a fomentar este ataque sea expulsado inmediatamente. Solo así podremos evitar una nueva insurrección liderada por los republicanos y unirnos como nación”.

Senate Republicans Refuse to Hold Donald Trump Accountable For Insurrection

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Senate Republicans prevented the body from reaching the two-thirds majority vote required to convict Donald Trump for inciting an insurrection with the intent to overthrow the results of the election. 

Despite irrefutable evidence and a majority of Americans saying they support convicting Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection which cost at least 5 lives, injured hundreds more, and endangered the lives of countless members of Congress and former Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Republicans put their own political interests before those of their country. 

In Response, Sierra Club Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight released the following statement:

“Despite the majority of Congressional Republican’s efforts, Donald Trump is and will forever be a traitor to this country and a threat to our democracy. Democracy demands justice. Democracy requires justice. Democracy is rooted in justice.

“The majority of Senate Republicans prioritizing an oath of party over the oath of office is yet another deadly and dangerous step they’ve taken to declare themselves the party of white supremacists, of extremists, and of total devotion to Donald Trump. A deliberative body is far from great when nearly half its members are more concerned with their political future than they are with holding those responsible for a deadly attack on our country accountable. Their actions today set a dangerous precedent -- which is why we must work to ensure that nothing like this can ever happen again.

“The outcome of today’s trial can not and must not be the end of holding those responsible for the insurrection accountable. Donald Trump, and those in Congress who aided and abetted his failed coup, must answer to the American people for their crimes against our country. Swift action must be taken to ensure that Donald Trump is never able to hold office again, and that any member of Congress who helped foment this attack is immediately expelled from the chamber. Only then can we ensure we prevent another Republican-led insurrection and unite as a country.”
