El Departamento del Interior Restaura Programa de Equidad en Acceso a la Naturaleza Eliminado por Trump

Washington, DC — El secretario del Interior en funciones, Scott de la Vega, rescindió una orden que eliminó efectivamente el programa de Asociación del Legado de Recreo en la Naturaleza (ORLP). 

 

En una de sus últimas decisiones bajo la administración Trump, el Departamento del Interior solapadamente eliminó el programa ORLP, el cual usa financiación del Fondo de Conservación del Agua y el Aire para apoyar el uso de parques y espacios verdes en ciudades, áreas urbanas y en comunidades históricamente desprivilegiadas y para redirigir recursos a donde fueran más necesarios. 

 

La orden del ex secretario del Interior David Bernhardt desvió $125 millones dedicados por el Congreso para el programa en 2021 y lo convirtió en un proceso competitivo que no se centró en la equidad.

 

 

“Nos congratulamos de la orden del secretario en funciones. La eliminación del programa ORLP fue una decisión cruel de último minuto por parte de la administración más anti medio ambiente de la historia. Cuando el público necesita la naturaleza más que nunca, la administración Trump se esforzó para negar esa oportunidad a las personas de color.

 

“Restaurando el programa ORLP, el Presidente Biden ha dejado claro que su administración toma en serio la equidad en la naturaleza. La decisión de hoy es un primer paso para construir un disfrute de la naturaleza más equitativo para todos. Deseamos seguir trabajando con la administración Biden-Harris para alcanzar esta meta”.

DOI Reinstates Outdoor Equity Program Eliminated by Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Acting Secretary of the Interior Scott de la Vega rescinded a Trump-era secretarial order that effectively eliminated the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program. 

In one of its final acts under the Trump administration, the Department of the Interior quietly eliminated the ORLP program, which uses funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support parks and greenspace projects in cities, urban areas, and historically underserved communities, directing resources where they were most needed. 

Ex-Interior Secretary David Bernhardt’s order redirected the $125 million Congress appropriated to the program for 2021 into a new competitive process that did not center equity in its decision-making process.

In response, Sierra Club Outdoors for All campaign director Jackie Ostfeld released the following statement:

"We are very pleased to see the Acting Secretary’s new order. The elimination of the ORLP program was a transparently cruel last-minute move from the most anti-environment administration in history. At a time when people need the outdoors more than ever, the Trump administration went out of its way to deny that opportunity to Black and brown communities.

"By reinstating the ORLP program, President Biden has made it clear that his administration takes equity in the outdoors seriously. Today’s decision is the first step in building a more just and equitable outdoors for all. We look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration to achieve that goal."
