WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, just three days after swearing an oath to uphold and protect the Constitution, dozens of Republican lawmakers attempted a coup by objecting to the certification of the Presidential election vote. An unelected Senator, Kelly Loeffler, is the only member of the Senate attempting to object to the vote in their own state; every other Senator is objecting to a vote in a state they do not represent. The Republicans’ entire effort is based on lies and inaccurate information.

President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in on January 20, 2021.

In response, Sierra Club Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight issued the following statement:

“This country belongs to all of us. The overwhelming majority of the people have rejected Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans’ efforts to undermine the bedrock of our democracy. The will of the people can not and will not be ignored.

“While Congressional Republicans try to sabotage our democracy in a desperate attempt to keep themselves in power, the leaders upholding their oath are focusing on the biggest challenges facing our country. Our families, our friends, and our communities are determined to confront the intertwining crises of this pandemic, racial injustice, and climate change, and no amount of lies Congressional Republicans and Donald Trump have promulgated and violence incited by their supporters will change that.”
