Washington, DC — En medio de la primera extinción masiva causada por la actividad humana en la que más de 1 millón de especies están en peligro de desaparecer para siempre, la administración Trump ha finalizado un regulación que desmantela protecciones cruciales de la Ley del Tratado de Aves Migratorias. Esta medida descabellada es la más reciente de una serie de decisiones de la administración Trump dirigidas a destruir esenciales salvaguardas de la vida silvestre.
Como respuesta, Kirin Kennedy, subdirectora legislativa del Sierra Club, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“En medio de la confluencia de crisis de extinción y clima, esta es exactamente la decisión equivocada. Dos terceras partes de las aves de Norteamérica están en peligro debido a la crisis climática. Más de 3.000 millones de aves han desaparecido desde 1970. Necesitamos más protecciones, no menos.
“La Ley del Tratado de Aves Migratorias ha logrado una monumental reducción en los impactos contra las aves por parte de actividades industriales dañinas a sus hábitats. Estas eliminaciones abren las puertas a que industrias destructivas se salgan con la suya cuando sus actos resulten en las muertes de aves migratorias. Las consecuencias serán trágicas para aves en peligro y para todos los que disfrutan cada año de la belleza y la música de estos asombrosos migrantes”.

Trump Administration Strips Protections from Migratory Birds
Migratory Bird Act Rollback Lets Destructive Industry Off-The-Hook
Washington, DC— In the midst of the first human-driven mass extinction with over 1 million species at risk of disappearing forever, the Trump administration has finalized a rule stripping critical protections from the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This reckless move is the latest in a slew of efforts by the Trump administration to gut vital safeguards for wildlife.
In response to the announcement, Kirin Kennedy, Deputy Legislative Director at the Sierra Club released the following statement:
“In the face of the interwoven extinction and climate crises, this is exactly the wrong move. Two-thirds of North America’s birds are imperiled by climate change. More than three billion birds have vanished since 1970. We need more protections, not less.
“The Migratory Bird Treaty Act has been monumental in reducing impacts to birds from damaging industrial activities in their habitats. This rollback paves the way for destructive industries to be let off-the-hook when their actions result in the deaths of migratory birds. The results will be tragic for imperiled birds and for all who welcome the sight and songs of these amazing migrants each year.”
