WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tonight, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act. In addition to upgrading our crumbling infrastructure to face the increased threats posed by climate change, the $1.5 trillion package includes investments in clean energy, public lands, pipes for safe drinking water, and our transportation system.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“After decades of deterioration, the Moving Forward Act is an overdue down payment on the pro-worker, equity-driven, climate-centered infrastructure plan we need to face the challenges of systemic racial injustice, an economy crippled by COVID-19, and the climate crisis.

“This bill offers much-needed modernization of our infrastructure, from transit systems to our energy grid, to create millions of good jobs, reduce pollution, and build a more accessible and sustainable public transportation system. Its investments in public lands would spur job creation where it’s needed most and ensure cleaner, more accessible landscapes for all. And it finally begins to address the lead pipe water crisis that communities across the nation -- particularly communities of color -- have been fighting for years.

“Donald Trump may have dismissed these crucial investments as a wishlist, but his denial does nothing to address the grave threats our communities face from decades of infrastructure neglect and extreme weather brought on by the climate crisis. We encourage the Senate to take up and quickly pass this bipartisan bill.”
