Washington, DC -- Today, House Democrats passed yet another comprehensive COVID relief package, while Senate Republicans have still failed to act on their previously passed bill for more than four months. The American Conservation Enhancement Act [HEROES Act] includes another round of direct payments, increased tax credits, food support, and rental assistance and utility shutoff protections for struggling families, an extension of unemployment insurance, and funding for the expansion and protection of vote by mail and safety measures for in-person voting.
Earlier today, it was reported that there are now more than 26 million Americans on unemployment.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
“Our families have suffered under the weight of this pandemic for months, losing family members, friends, and a sense of community. Yet in between their numerous recesses, Senate Republicans have failed to provide relief. Mitch McConnell needs to stop trying to ram through Donald Trump’s extremist judges and, instead, prioritize the people by following House Democrats’ lead and passing the HEROES Act now.”
