Atlanta, GA: The Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Jon Ossoff in the race for U.S. Senate.
"We are pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Jon Ossoff for election to the US Senate," said Eddie Ehlert, Sierra Club Georgia Chapter Political Chair. "We are confident that he will work to protect our families’ health, air and water and build a clean energy economy that works for Georgians."
Given the current administration and Congressional Republicans’ continued threats to clean air and water, it is more important than ever to elect environmental champions to the Senate. Ossoff has pledged to fight for massive investments in clean and renewable energy and transitioning away from carbon-emitting energy production. At the same time, David Perdue has suggested eliminating the Environmental Protection Agency, taken a “both sides” approach toward climate change, voted for President Trump’s anti-environmental nominees, opposed the clean power plan and efforts to promote renewable energy, and opposed Waters of the United States and the stream protection rule.
“The health of our environment is essential to our own health, security, and prosperity. In the U.S. Senate, I’ll make energy and environmental policy on the basis of scientific evidence — not lobbying by polluters,” said Ossoff. “I’m honored by the Sierra Club’s endorsement and look forward to working with them to enact a historic infrastructure and clean energy program that will help rebuild our economy and lay the foundations for decades of prosperity, health, and sustainability.”
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Ossoff’s campaign.
“This is the most consequential election of our lifetimes, and it has never been more important to build a majority in the Senate that understands the urgency of the climate crisis and the need to protect clean air and water and preserve our public lands,” said Sierra Club PAC Director Matthew Gravatt. “The Sierra Club is committed to doing all we can to mobilize our members and volunteers to ensure that Jon Ossoff is elected. We look forward to a victory for Jon Ossoff on election night and to working with him to fight for our environment as a U.S. Senator.”
