Las Vegas, NV -- The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a rich history of improving air and water quality throughout the US, but the Trump Administration has proposed slashing the Agency’s budget by 31 percent. These cuts would cause significant harm here in Nevada. This Friday, former EPA staff and clean air advocates will speak to defend the Agency, which was created 47 years ago on December 2nd, 1970, by Republican President Richard Nixon.

Date: Friday, December 1st

Time: 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. PST

Location: US Environmental Protection Agency, 944 E. Harmon Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89119

Speakers:

  • Eymhy Corpus, Sierra Club Organizing Representative
  • Jeffrey Van Ee, Former pollution specialist at the EPA
  • Alondra Regalado, Senator in the undergraduate student government at UNLV; President of Scientista Foundation, a campus organization dedicated to promoting women in STEM.

The EPA has been critical in helping clean up Nevada’s thousands of abandoned mines, 399 brownfield sites, and the Carson River Mercury Superfund Site. In 2016 alone, the EPA provided nearly $50 million to clean up lands and protect communities in the state.  As Nevada continues to regularly exceed previous heat records, experience an ongoing drought, and face increased threat from wildfire, the EPA has been tasked with cleaning up the dangerous carbon pollution that fuels climate change. Without maintaining EPA resources, Nevada’s Division of Environmental Protection will be stretched thin to try to compensate for lost resources.
