Washington, DC -- Yesterday, Donald Trump signed an Executive Order instructing federal agencies to further waive, suspend, and eliminate public health and environmental safeguards. The Order enables  federal agencies with the power to make hundreds of permanent cuts to safeguards and standards, including bedrock clean air and water standards. Trump is encouraging his Administration to eliminate as many environmental safeguards as possible while rejecting additional aid to support American families and businesses, claiming they have a “luxury to watch and see” before acting.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune Released the following Statement:

“The Trump Administration is using the cover of the pandemic to undermine and attack environmental and health safeguards rather than helping families and workers in need. This Executive Order is a staggering abuse of presidential power and threatens decades of hard-earned, crucial protections, further exposing already vulnerable communities to toxic pollution and increasing their susceptibility to the most severe consequences of COVID-19. Everyone deserves to live in clean, safe, and healthy communities.”
