Oakland, CA -- The Sierra Club’s Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement on the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

“No one should fear for their lives when stepping outdoors. Yet, far too often, we are reminded that so many Americans are the targets of profiling, hatred, and brutality. The murder of Ahmaud Arbery is the latest in a staggeringly long list of Black people murdered because of the color of their skin. This crime cannot, like so many others, be allowed to evade justice.

“Every person deserves the right to live in healthy, safe, welcoming communities and it is outrageous that people of color are unjustly denied those basic rights. It is more important than ever to clearly say that Black lives matter and that white supremacy can no longer be tolerated. The Sierra Club is in solidarity with those demanding justice and struggling for change.”
