Chicago, IL -- Late yesterday evening, Sierra Club-endorsed candidate Marie Newman won her primary to become the Democratic nominee in Illinois' Third Congressional District. The Sierra Club endorsed Newman earlier this year, their second endorsement of a challenger to a Democratic incumbent this cycle.
Sierra Club members and supporters helped get out the vote for Newman as part of its Victory Corps program, a nationwide coordinated effort that embeds staff on state and federal campaigns around the country. The conservation organization also ran a direct mail campaign, highlighting Newman’s environmental and climate credentials including her support for a Green New Deal.
In response, Sierra Club Illinois Deputy Director Kady McFadden released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club is proud to congratulate Marie Newman, a true climate champion, on her victory tonight. Newman’s victory is a reminder that the American people want Congress to act on climate and not shy away from the bold solutions required. We look forward to finishing the job and electing Newman as the next representative for Illinois’ Third District.”
