WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following yesterday’s release of Trump’s revised NAFTA 2.0, the Sierra Club evaluated the newly-updated text against the fundamental changes the environmental community has repeatedly called for. The revised deal fails on each of the 7 core environmental priorities that the Sierra Club and other leading environmental organizations have consistently named, most recently in a joint letter to Congress sent on Monday.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The only surprising part of the newly revised text of Trump’s NAFTA 2.0 is that it will be even worse than we originally anticipated for our air, water, climate, and communities. The revised deal falls far short of the fundamental changes that Democrats and environmental groups have consistently said are needed to curb NAFTA’s environmental damage.

“The American people and all people across North America deserve a modern deal that protects our communities, not one that would help corporations dodge climate policies, expand fossil fuels, and export toxic pollution and jobs.

“The Sierra Club strongly opposes Trump’s climate-denying, pro-polluter NAFTA 2.0 and we call on members of Congress to do the same. Instead of locking us into a deal that would prolong Trump’s polluting legacy for years after he is out of office, we ask members of Congress to fight for trade deals under a new administration that actually protect people and our planet.”
