WASHINGTON — Today, Donald Trump formally began the process of withdrawing the United States from the historic Paris Climate Agreement. The earliest the U.S. will be able to complete the withdrawal is one year from today, November 4, 2020, which is the day after the next Presidential election. It would only take 30 days for a new administration to rejoin the deal.
Nearly 70 percent of Americans, including a majority in all 50 states, support the U.S. participating in the Paris Agreement.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"Donald Trump is the worst president in history for our climate and our clean air and water. Long after Trump is out of office, his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement will be seen as a historic error. Trump has once again demonstrated that he is more interested in catering to the interests of the world’s worst polluters than he is in listening to the American people.
“In the face of Trump’s ignorance, the American people, cities, states, and businesses have and will continue to lead the way in tackling the climate crisis and supporting the booming clean energy economy. The millions of Americans who are fighting to protect our climate and the future of our planet will no doubt remember this moment next November.”
