WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Donald Trump announced that he has chosen his own National Doral golf resort as the site for the June 2020 G-7 summit. Trump’s Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told reporters today that it was Trump’s idea to host the summit at his resort and the administration did not see any conflict of interest in the decision. If the Summit is hosted at Doral as planned, the Trump Organization stands to make millions of dollars from the 7 governments who will attend, which would provide a boost for the failing resort. The last time the United States hosted the summit in 2012, President Obama chose government-owned Camp David in order to cut costs for taxpayers.

The administration has also already said that the 2020 summit will not include any discussion of the ongoing global climate crisis, despite Trump’s Doral resort being located in Miami, which has seen a 320 percent increase in how often it floods over the past 20 years as a result of rising sea levels.

Senator Jeff Merkley announced he will introduce a bill to stop Trump’s corruption of the G-7 early next week.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Donald Trump’s corruption is on full display for the world to see. Hosting the G-7 summit at his own resort is just the latest brazen and unconstitutional attempt to enrich himself and his family. Congress owes it to the American people to hold Donald Trump accountable and block federal funds from being used at Trump properties.”
