WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Hundreds of thousands of California residents are under evacuation orders as fast-moving fires in Northern and Southern California continue to destroy homes and businesses.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement:

“At the Sierra Club, we are holding close all those who face displacement and the loss of homes and livelihoods from these devastating fires. We are grateful for the first responders who are risking their safety as they work tirelessly to manage these fires.

“Our immediate concern and focus is on the safety of those at risk right now. The climate crisis has increased the risk of unnaturally large and more dangerous fires. The long-term safety of our communities demands action on climate. We cannot afford delay.”
