WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following recent evidence of Trump’s ongoing corruption, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will reportedly announce a formal impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump.

Over the past few days, Trump admitted to talking with the President of Ukraine about investigating his political opponent and withheld military aid as a threat. Additionally, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report found at least 140 contacts between Trump and his associates and Russian nationals, WikiLeaks, and their intermediaries during the 2016 campaign and presidential transition. Trump continues to face a multitude of investigations, and in one case, has already been listed as an unindicted co-conspirator. In May he held up legislation, threatening to do so until Congress dropped the investigations into his obstruction and corruption.

As the nation’s largest grassroots environmental advocacy organization, with millions of members and supporters nationwide, the Sierra Club is a key part of U.S. civil society and a bulwark for both environmental protection and safeguarding American democracy. The Sierra Club and the American people require a functioning government and democratic access to that government to achieve our mission of protecting the human and natural environment.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"If our democratic norms and the law mean nothing, then the legal and democratic tools we use to protect clean air and water, public lands, and a safe climate could become meaningless. In order to protect himself, Donald Trump is regularly threatening the integrity of laws we all abide by, undermining the core principles of our democracy, and ignoring his oath of office. He is repeatedly proving that he is a danger to our Constitution and our country.

“The American public deserves transparency and accountability. For the protection of our democracy, the integrity of the institution of the White House, and the future of our country, it is critical that the House of Representatives holds Trump accountable for his corrupt acts by moving forward with impeachment proceedings.”
