NEW YORK CITY, NY -- In a recently released newsletter, New York City’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) highlighted that the electric vehicles in its city fleet -- compared to vehicles fueled by oil and gas -- are providing dramatic cost savings for the City due to lower maintenance costs. The newsletter states that the EV fleet is “achieving the fuel, emissions, and maintenance benefits” of an “exciting transition away from the internal combustion engine.” The City currently owns and operates over 1,200 EVs, making New York City’s fleet the most environmentally progressive in the nation.

In response, Sierra Club’s New York Campaign Representative for Transportation Allison Considine released the following statement:

"This study confirms what we know to be true: Investing in electric vehicles is a win-win solution for communities, the environment and consumers. New York City is leading by example through its fleet sustainability program, and we hope that these initial positive findings will lead to further and faster electrification of the City’s fleet. We also hope this study serves as a model and challenge to other communities across the state in their electrification efforts so that the wide-ranging significant benefits of EVs -- from reductions in transportation pollution to cost savings -- can be brought to all the people of New York.”
