WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, former Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified before Congress about his report investigating Donald Trump’s obstruction of justice as it relates to the Russia investigation. Throughout the hearing, Mueller made clear that his report does not exonerate President Trump and that Trump could be charged with obstruction of justice after leaving office.
Mueller also discussed how the Special Counsel’s report found at least 140 contacts between Trump and his associates and Russian nationals, WikiLeaks, and their intermediaries, during the 2016 campaign and presidential transition. Criminal activity found in Mueller’s report includes 37 indictments, seven convictions or guilty pleas,10 possible instances of obstruction by President Trump and several instances of lying to investigators about over 100 secret meetings with Russians.
All of civil society -- including the Sierra Club -- requires a functioning government and democratic access to that government. Eroding the democratic norms and the balance of power between branches of government can render the entire bedrock legal infrastructure -- including environmental law -- meaningless.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony today makes it abundantly clear that Trump is not exonerated from wrongdoing. Whether it be the damning findings of the Mueller report or Trump holding up legislation in an effort to stop congressional investigations, the evidence shows Trump has routinely abused his power and obstructed justice to cover up his own corruption.
“It is Congress’ constitutional duty to provide oversight of the executive branch and with his report and testimony today, Mueller provided Congress with the responsibility and evidence to hold the Trump administration accountable. The American public deserves transparency and accountability. For the protection of our democracy, the integrity of the institution of the White House, and the future of our country, it is imperative that Congress continue this investigation.”
