WASHINGTON, DC - The Sierra Club is launching a monthly 2020 Democratic Primary tracking poll, conducted by Morning Consult, with the first wave of results coming ahead of next week’s Democratic debates in Miami.

Morning Consult will conduct the 2020 Climate Voter Tracking Poll for Sierra Club in order to determine how candidates stack up with Democratic primary voters who are most deeply concerned about the climate crisis and the candidates’ plans to tackle it.

“This could be the last Presidential race in which the winner can make a real difference in tackling the climate crisis, and all signs are pointing to voters across the country making climate action a priority when they vote,” said Sierra Club National Political Director Ariel Hayes.  “This poll will answer important questions about what the large segment of the electorate most concerned about the climate crisis is thinking, making clear who climate voters are supporting now, and how that sentiment evolves over the coming months.”

The Morning Consult poll for the Sierra Club will be conducted on a monthly basis starting next week.

“We know from all of the public polling so far that Democratic primary voters are deeply concerned about the climate crisis, but we don’t know yet who they are supporting,” said Grace McRae, Sierra Club Director of Polling and Research, “This tracking poll will help answer that question.”

According to a CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll conducted last week, three quarters of likely Iowa Democratic caucus participants said that “Recognition of climate change as the greatest threat to humanity” is a “must have” in a nominee for President.

A separate CNN national poll conducted in late April found that 82 percent of Democratic respondents said it’s “very important” that their party’s nominee for president supports taking “aggressive action” to slow the effects of climate change.

More details about Morning Consult’s tracking poll for the Sierra Club will be released soon.
