WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced she will be introducing the International Climate Accountability Act, the Senate companion bill to the Climate Action Now Act passed in the House earlier this month.
Like the Climate Action Now Act, the International Climate Accountability Act will ensure that Trump is unable to follow through on his reckless and ill-informed threat to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement by prohibiting the administration from spending money on withdrawal and requiring the administration to produce a plan for meeting our international commitments.
Tomorrow, June 1, marks two years since Donald Trump announced his disastrous plan to withdraw the U.S. from the landmark Paris Agreement. Last week, it was reported that as many as 80 nations plan to increase their commitment to the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule. The Agreement, which entered into force on November 4, 2016, has been signed by every nation on earth, and the earliest the U.S. will be able to complete Trump’s withdrawal is November 4, 2020, one day after the next U.S. Presidential election.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club applauds Senator Shaheen and Congressional Democrats for demanding climate action. While Donald Trump may be seeking to retreat from global leadership, Democrats are listening to the majority of Americans and taking up the mantle of strong climate leadership. In the two years since Trump announced his plan to unilaterally withdraw the U.S. from the historic Paris Climate Agreement, he has doubled down on his egregious and reckless climate denial while hundreds of thousands of families across the U.S. face unprecedented hurricanes, droughts, tornadoes, and wildfires. America’s leaders must tackle the climate crisis to protect public health, create family-sustaining clean energy jobs, and provide a livable future for all.
“The Sierra Club calls on all Senators to co-sponsor the commonsense International Climate Accountability Act. ”
