WASHINGTON, DC -- On Tuesday, May 7 at 1pm ET, the Sierra Club and Chesapeake Climate Action Network will host a telepresser on the national momentum toward 100% clean energy.
The telepresser will be held two weeks after Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed S.B. 358, a law requiring 50% renewable energy by 2030 and aiming for 100% clean by 2050, and before Washington state Governor Jay Inslee signs Washington’s landmark 100% clean electricity bill. Washington joins California, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico as the fifth state to adopt a 100% clean target, a goal also shared by Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and 121 cities. This call will cover how and why 100% clean energy has become the new normal, and what needs to happen next to reach these targets.
WHAT: A telepresser featuring an array of officials, energy experts, and advocates from across the country to review the state of “100% clean energy” as a climate goal and policy framework.
WHO:
-
Lauren McCloy, Senior Policy Advisor of Energy for Washington Governor Jay Inslee
-
Jodie Van Horn, Director of the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 Action Campaign
-

WHEN: Tuesday, May 7 at 1pm ET / 10am PT
HOW: Dial: 877‑876‑9173
Conference ID: ENERGY
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:
In the 2018 election, 1,400 candidates across the country supported 100% clean energy, including several governors that were elected into office. Today, 23 states have joined the U.S. Climate Alliance -- further evidence that climate leadership is happening at the subnational level.
This year and across the country, clean energy policy has seen some of its strongest successes to date: beyond the seven state-level jurisdictions that have established 100% legislation, several other states, cities, and utilities have also passed, introduced, or are considering policies to transition away from fossil fuels in the electricity sector. Maryland passed a 50% Renewable Portfolio Standard, and power providers like Idaho Power, Avista, and Public Service Company of New Mexico have adopted carbon-free goals.
Upon Governor Inslee’s signature on Washington’s bill, 1 in 5 people in the United States will live in a place committed to 100% clean electricity.
*A recording of the call will be made available after the telepresser*
