Denver, CO-- Today, Rep. DeGette introduced the 2019 Colorado Wilderness Act-- legislation that would safeguard more than 740,000 acres of land located in 33 critical wildlife and ecologically-sensitive areas in Colorado. The legislation emphasizes the value of recreation, protection of wildlife and clean water in protecting the lands permanently.

A recent survey by Colorado College found that over 70 percent of Colorado’s residents participate in some sort of outdoor recreational activity each year. And most Coloradanssurveyed agree that one of Congress’ top priorities this year should be working to permanently protect the state’s public lands for future generations.

In response, Kimberley Pope, organizer for the Sierra Club’s Our Wild America campaign in Colorado, released the following statement:

“While the Trump administration continues to attack our wildlands and waters, it is inspiring to see a champion Congresswoman advocate for our shared values at the national level. Rep. DeGette recognizes something we’ve known throughout history: clean water, clean air and wild lands benefit us all.

“We applaud Rep. DeGette for taking strides to protect public lands. These places are paramount in safeguarding the environment, stimulating our region’s economy and improving public health.

“Protecting these lands means Colorado will be better equipped to combat climate change, safeguard our water supplies and pass down these special places to future generations.”
