Washington, DC-- Moments ago, the House failed to pass a measure that would undo Trump’s veto on a bipartisan resolution to terminate his declaration of a national emergency. The legality of the president’s national emergency-- and its over $9 billion of diverted funds from critical security programs to construction of a border wall-- is now in the hands of the courts where numerous lawsuits against Trump’s declaration, including the Sierra Club and ACLU’s, will be considered. In response, Jordan Giaconia, Federal Policy Associate at the Sierra Club released the following statement:
“The fight isn’t over. Our legal team-- and all of those advocating for border communities across the country-- will fight Trump’s blatant abuse of power tooth-and-nail. This national emergency declaration is a clear violation of separation of powers as defined in the Constitution.
“This administration is stoking fear in the American people, carrying out a humanitarian crisis of its own making and stopping at nothing to get border walls that the public overwhelmingly rejects. Our justice system cannot allow Trump to illegally attack our Constitution, toy with the lives of Americans who live on the border, and destroy our environment. The courts must preserve our democracy, do what’s right, and terminate this fake national emergency.”
