Washington, DC-- Today, Rep. Lee and Sen. Hirono introduced the Women and Climate Act of 2019-- legislation aimed at developing coordinated strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change on women and girls around the world. Women make up 70% of the world’s one billion poorest people, and these women comprise the majority of our globe’s agricultural workforce, which is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate disruption. The bill would establish a Federal Interagency Working Group on Women and Climate Change within the U.S. Department of State. Read more about the legislation here.

In response, A.Tianna Scozzaro, Director of Sierra Club’s Gender, Equity and Environment Program released the following statement:

“Climate change is happening now, and women are feeling the impact.  No matter one’s gender, we all deserve access to clean air and water, and a safe and healthy environment.. That’s why we must support women who are already a driving force in creating climate solutions in their communities. Sierra Club applauds Representative Lee and Senator Hirono for introducing the Women and Climate Act at such a critical moment in our nation’s effort to tackle the climate crisis.”
