Washington, DC-- Today, in a 59-41 vote, the Senate passed a resolution to terminate Trump’s National Emergency declaration-- days after the House passed the companion measure. Sens. Udall (D-NM) and Collins (R-ME) introduced the bipartisan resolution aimed at stopping the president from taking money from critical government programs to construct more border wall. The Sierra Club, Southern Border Communities Coalition, and ACLU also filed a lawsuit last week, challenging that the National Emergency declaration violates the separation of powers as laid out in the Constitution. For more information on the Senate resolution, see here.
In response, Melinda Pierce, Legislative Director at the Sierra Club, released the following statement:
“Today, 59 Senators put party aside, and put our democracy first. Senators on both sides of the aisle rejected the President Trump’s attempt to violate the Constitution and circumvent Congress in order to drive his unpopular, hateful agenda. Sierra Club applauds the Senate for pushing back against the militarization of safe towns and more destructive border walls in communities.
“The successful passage of this resolution in both chambers is proof that Trump's action is an illegal, brazen attempt to circumvent the will of Congress, our constitution, and the American people.”
