Washington, DC -- Today, Mitch McConnell’s rushed political ploy to force a vote on Senator Markey and Representative Ocasio-Cortez’ nonbinding Green New Deal resolution prior to formal legislation being drafted or any hearings being held backfired. Rather than creating a political wedge, the theatrics and misinformation pushed by Senate Republicans exposed their lack of a sensible plan to combat climate change.

Poll after poll shows overwhelming support for climate action, despite Donald Trump and Washington Republican’s attempts to deny reality.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Today’s vote conclusively proved that Senate Republicans do not take the American people’s demand for climate action seriously. While communities across the country continue to struggle with climate-fueled disasters, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are wasting time and the taxpayers dime on cynical ploys and theatrics that have exposed the fact they either don’t believe in science or don’t have a plan to tackle the climate crisis. Rather than removing their heads from the sand, Washington Republicans appear content with digging deeper. This is an utter failure of leadership and American families need and deserve better.

“The American people have made it clear they need and demand climate action. Washington Republicans can either get on board or get out of the way.”
