Washington, DC-- This morning, the Pentagon authorized Congress to move $1 billion ofappropriated funding to build more walls on the US-Mexico border following Donald Trump’s emergency declaration. In a press statement, the Pentagon said the funds would “support the Department of Homeland Security’s request to build 57 miles of 18-foot-high” barriers, though the exact mileage and location has not yet been announced. Last week, both the House and Senate passed resolutions to terminate Trump’s national emergency which allows these transfers of funds from critical security budgets to border wall construction. Trump’s’ emergency declaration still faces numerous lawsuits, including a challenge by the Sierra Club and ACLU.

In response, Dan Millis, Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter Borderlands Program Manager released the following statement:

“This administration will stop at nothing-- not even the will of the American people, the majority of our elected officials, nor the Constitution-- to abuse power and fund a project that the majority of our country rejects. We know border walls and barriers are ineffective, destructive, and an environmental disaster.

“Using taxpayer dollars to fund a  massive down payment for more border walls and barriers is immoral. These barriers will continue to inflict severe harm on borderlands communities, the U.S. economy, and the natural environment of the Southwest United States. The courts must immediately put a check on Trump’s uncontrolled  abuse of power-- ending his fake national emergency and his stealing public funds for a backward, xenophobic agenda."
