Washington, DC-- Today, Senators Udall (D-NM) and Collins (R-ME) introduced a bipartisan resolution to terminate the president’s national emergency declaration and uphold the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution. The introduction comes just days after the House overwhelmingly voted to do the same. For more information on the Senate resolution, see here.
In response, Melinda Pierce, Director of Federal Policy at the Sierra Club, released the following statement:
“It speaks volumes to the danger posed to our democracy and the unpopularity of border walls when members of Trump’s own party move to work across the aisle and terminate his national emergency declaration.
“Border communities deserve fair democracy and equal protection. Trump’s egregious emergency declaration is a blatant violation of the Constitution’s separation of powers-- and all for more destructive and racially-motivated border walls.
The Sierra Club thanks this bipartisan effort led by Senators Udall and Collins, as well as co-sponsors for being a powerful check on Trump’s abuse of power, and urges all members of the Senate to vote for this important piece of legislation."
