WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, two hearings on the climate crisis were held in the U.S. House of representatives -- the first climate hearings of the new Congress. In fact, today’s events are the first climate hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee in six years and the first in the House Natural Resources Committee in eight years.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"These hearings mark a sea change in the House of Representatives, as the years of denial and inaction by House Republicans have been replaced by momentum toward real climate solutions. Powerful testimony from governors from both parties --- including Republican Charlie Baker and Democrat Roy Cooper -- about the urgent need to act and the solutions that are working in their states proves the momentum and the need to act make this a decisive moment in history. We applaud Chairman Grijalva, Chairman Pallone, and Representative Tonko for their leadership in convening these hearings, and look forward to more discussion and action in the months to come. Coupling these hearings with serious proposals that move our country toward a 100% clean energy economy at the speed that science and justice demand is what the American public voted for last November and what they expect from our elected leaders.”
