McAllen, TX-- Tomorrow, President Trump will visit the Rio Grande Valley to push his agenda for a border wall and increased militarization. The Trump administration has already received $1.6 billion for 84 miles of wall construction in South Texas, has waived 38 laws in the process, and is moving forward with building a destructive wall through sensitive wildlife refuges and a historic chapel, despite strong opposition from the local community. Trump’s visit comes on the three-week mark of a government shutdown driven by the push for billions of dollars for border wall funding.

In response, Reggie James, Director of Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter, released the following statement:

“The president's hateful agenda and dehumanization of people are not welcome here in Texas - or anywhere. Our communities, innocent asylum seekers, and government workers are being used as bargaining chips for an unpopular, cruel push for a border wall. It’s unacceptable and immoral. The Sierra Club is in complete solidarity with communities along the border who are defending against destruction of their lands, tearing apart of families, and militarizing of the towns they live.”
