Washington, DC-- Tonight, in a prime time address to the nation, Donald Trump addressed what he calls a ‘crisis’ on the Southern border. The speech comes almost three weeks into a Trump-caused government shutdown that has left thousands of federal employees, including border patrol officials, without a paycheck and out-of-work.
In response to the speech, Sierra Club Executive Director Mike Brune released the following statement:
“The only crisis on the border is the one the Trump administration is causing. The Administration’s cruel treatment of asylum seekers, waiving of bedrock laws and tearing apart of communities for a destructive border wall and dangerous militarization is drastically shaking the lives of people on our Southern border. Meanwhile, Trump continues using inflammatory and racist rhetoric to distract from the fact he has failed as a leader. Despite Trump’s words, the reality is that the public does not want Trump’s border wall boondoggle. It is long past time to move past these political games and pass a clean funding package so that the government can get back to work.”
