Annapolis, MD -- On Monday, Maryland took a step closer to its goal of getting 300,000 electrical vehicles on its roads by 2025 when utilities won state approval to support the addition of 5,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, engage in EV education and outreach to their customers, and promote management of new EV electric load. Although the Maryland Public Service Commission’s decision fell short of authorizing the number of charging ports utilities and many stakeholders had advocated for, it still advances the goal of making electric vehicles more convenient to drive in Maryland and EV charging stations cheaper and easier to install. Important details of the programs remain to be hammered out in follow-up filings with the Maryland Public Service Commission, and utilities and green groups must use those opportunities to continue fighting for Maryland’s clean energy future.
In response, Sierra Club Senior Attorney Josh Berman released the following statement:
“This Order is an important first step towards Maryland reaching its Zero Emission Vehicle commitments and 2030 Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Act climate goals, but it leaves a lot of work for the State to do in the transportation sector. In particular, the Order leaves an unmet need for extending the benefits of electrified transportation to underserved communities. We appreciate the considerable work by the utilities and other stakeholders to develop the proposals to the Commission and look forward to working with all of these groups to help make electric vehicles as cheap, accessible, and driveable as possible for all of Maryland’s residents.”
