Washington, DC -- Earlier today, Donald Trump tweeted about his calls for a border wall and sought to save face from his constant claims that Mexico would pay for it by falsely claiming they will through the proposed trilateral trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

In response, Sierra Club Living Economy Director Ben Beachy released the following statement:

“Let’s get this straight: Trump is saying that all of the costs shouldered by the people who would be hurt by his anti-worker, anti-environment trade policies will go towards constructing an unpopular, destructive, xenophobic and obscenely expensive border wall. The absurdity of his plan would be laughable if it weren’t so offensive and so disconnected from reality. NAFTA must be rewritten to help all of our communities build a more equitable future, not to push Trump’s racist border wall agenda. Trump can’t hide the fact  that it is the American people who would have to pay for his terrible ideas.”
