SAN ANTONIO— On Saturday, December 15, the Climate Action SA coalition will host a party to celebrate the upcoming closure of the J.T. “Dirty” Deely coal-fired power plant. Deely is one of two coal plants owned and operated by CPS Energy in San Antonio and is a major source of harmful air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2011, CPS Energy agreed to shut down Deely by 2018 and the public utility has pledged to make good on that promise by December 31, 2018. Since CPS Energy’s pledge to shutter the aging coal plant, Bexar County has been designated in nonattainment for dangerous smog pollution (ground-level ozone) and the climate crisis has intensified. The shutting down of Deely doesn’t come a moment too soon.

San Antonio community members, organizers, and activists were instrumental in securing the commitment to shut down Deely and will be present to tell their stories at the press conference. Climate Action SA looks forward to celebrating the community work that led to this important step toward a clean energy future for San Antonio.
