WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Sierra Club announced its support of Nancy Pelosi as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives -- the first endorsement the organization has ever made in a House leadership race.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"The Sierra Club deeply values Leader Pelosi’s tireless commitment to protecting our environment, our climate, and our democracy. Her leadership is more important now than ever, as these values and our communities are under attack by Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration.

“With the powerful new majority that was elected this month -- including incoming progressives focused on the urgency of the climate crisis -- Leader Pelosi can ensure the House takes on the challenges that face our nation. That includes action on investing in rebuilding the nation’s crumbling infrastructure and promoting clean transportation; protecting the right to vote and our democracy; and advancing policies like a Green New Deal that tackles the twin crises of inequality and climate disruption, while putting us on a path to a 100% clean, renewable energy economy that creates millions of family-sustaining jobs.

“Leader Pelosi has proven again and again that she is a leader prepared to take the action that is needed, and who will use the power of the people’s house to put the needs of the people first. We look forward to working with Leader Pelosi next year as Speaker of the House, and to working with her and the growing group of progressive climate champions in Congress to restore U.S. leadership on climate action, and build an economy and a government that serves all -- not just the wealthy few. ”
