Curbelo Turns to Lies To Cover-Up His Failure to Act on Climate

Miami, FL -- On behalf of endangered representative Carlos Curbelo, the National Republican Campaign Committee is running a misleading ad which lies about Debbie Mucarsel-Powell’s record and commitment to act on climate change. Carlos Curbelo has long claimed to be an advocate for climate action, but his voting record shows otherwise. Curbelo has voted to increase LNG exports, approve the Keystone XL pipeline, open up the Arctic Refuge for drilling, and attacked clean energy while increasing funding for fossil fuels.

The NRCC has taken in nearly $10 million in contributions from polluters this cycle alone.

In response, Sierra Club PAC Director Sarah Burton released the following statement:

“In less than a weeks time, Carlos Curbelo will be forced to reckon with the truth that his failure to be a true climate champion is why he’s been voted out of office. If Curbelo had been half the climate champion he claims he is, he wouldn’t be desperately seeking an ad littered with lies such as this. But Curbelo isn’t a climate champion, he’s a consistent vote against clean energy, against our public lands, and in favor of fossil fuels.

“Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a climate champion, and the advocate South Floridians need as they watch sea-levels rise, see beaches destroyed by red tide, and live with the increasing threat of stronger, more powerful hurricanes.”
