Oscoda, MI-- This morning, the Detroit Free Press reported that Attorney General Bill Schuette is “dragging his feet” on yet another case of PFAS contamination in Michigan. Schuette’s office sat on complaints for over nine months concerning the U.S. Air Force’s contamination of water adjacent to the Wurtsmith Air Force Base, which was closed due to PFAS water contamination years ago. According to the Free Press, Schuette delayed Michigan’s implementation of a state administrative rule for cleanup of surface water contamination spanning from April 2017 to February 2018. The case adds to a growing list of complaints against Schuette for failing to act on water contamination, including ignoring reports of problems with Flint’s drinking water and corporate PFAS contamination across the state.
In response, David Holtz, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Chair released the following statement:
“Attorney General Bill Schuette is failing communities all across Michigan when it comes to taking legal action on poisoned water for the sake of public health. He’s sitting on PFAS contamination complaints just like he chose not to act on reports of lead in Flint’s drinking water. Attorney General Schuette had the authority to take legal action, but instead he chose to delay holding the Air Force accountable for their toxic mess. The time to act was yesterday. Schuette’s repeated failure to act as AG doesn’t warrant a promotion, it’s grounds for termination.”
