SALT LAKE CITY -- Tonight will kick off the first of three public meetings on a proposed management plan for Bears Ears National Monument. The plan leaves most of Bears Ears without protections and comes despite current legal challenges to the Trump administration’s illegal actions to shrink the monuments.
“The fact remains that the Trump administration acted illegally when it stripped the lands of Bears Ears of their monument status. Now Zinke’s Interior has made clear that those lands will not receive the protections from mining and drilling that they are rightfully due. This administration must consider the cultural and natural value of the lands within the original monument boundaries and the benefits of preserving them as originally intended. They have an obligation to listen to the outcry from the American people, and in particular, the communities most directly impacted by Trump’s illegal action here in Utah,” said Ashley Soltysiak, Director of Utah Sierra Club.
The hearings will be held:
Oct. 2, 5 to 8 p.m., San Juan High School, 311 N. 100 E, Blanding
Oct. 3, 5 to 8 p.m., Bluff Community Center, 190 N. Third St. E, Bluff.
Oct. 4, 5 to 8 p.m., White Horse High School, Utah Highway 262, Montezuma Creek
