WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This weekend, The New York Times revealed that the Trump Administration is planning a sweeping attack that would undermine current civil rights protections transgender people across the country. This is the latest cruel assault on the LGBTQ community by the Trump Administration over the last two years, including efforts to ban transgender people from the military and plans to stop counting LGBTQ people in the 2020 census.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club strongly condemns this immoral proposal, which is nothing less than a heartless attack on the human rights of millions of transgender people across this country. Trump’s mean-spirited attempts to dehumanize transgender people are an affront to the fundamental belief that every person in this country deserves fair treatment under the law. Already, transgender people face hate and dangerous discrimination in their everyday lives, and now the Trump Administration is trying to shred the few existing protections on the books.

“We at the Sierra Club rise in solidarity with our partners and the effort to defeat this inhumane proposal. Protecting the rights of every person in this country and protecting our environment go hand-in-hand, and all who cherish the promise of a just and free America must fight discriminatory and divisive actions like this proposal.”
