Washington, DC -- Today, all but one Senate Republican -- along with one Senate Democrat -- voted to confirm Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. Multiple women have shared their stories of sexual assault by Brett Kavanaugh, and he has been caught lying numerous times while under oath.
For weeks now, millions of Americans have called or visited their senators’ offices, and thousands more have taken to the streets, demanding Brett Kavanaugh be rejected.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The confirmation of Donald Trump’s dangerous and unfit nominee will have high costs for our country and our families that will be felt for generations to come. Senate Republicans’ decision to empower Brett Kavanaugh’s extremist ideology poses a direct threat to women’s rights, voting rights, civil rights, clean air and water, and climate action. But, this confirmation will also have costs for everyone who enabled Kavanaugh. No one will soon forget that Senate Republicans ignored the survivors of sexual assault in favor of pushing Donald Trump’s agenda. No one will forget that they approved Kavanaugh after he disqualified himself by lying and proving himself unfit throughout the confirmation process. No one will forget who stood on the right side of history, and who, instead, stood with Trump and Kavanaugh.
“This is a dark day, but November is coming. If Senate Republicans think the public will forget what they have just done, they will be in for a wake-up call on Election Day. Elections belong to the people and they spoke loudly and clearly in demanding Brett Kavanaugh be rejected -- but Senate Republicans refused to listen. Those who stood with Kavanaugh won’t have that luxury on Election Day. Nothing will change the shameful actions that led to today, but, by using our voices to vote, to organize, and to continue to fight, we will move forward together.”
