Washington, DC -- Today, Senate Republicans voted to move Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, forward. Multiple women have shared their stories of sexual assault by Brett Kavanaugh, and he has been caught lying numerous times while under oath. For more than 200 years, the Senate have honored a 60 vote margin for Supreme Court nominees to be moved forward. Kavanaugh only received 51.
For weeks now, millions of Americans have called or visited their senators’ offices, and thousands more have taken to the streets, demanding Brett Kavanaugh be rejected.
The confirmation vote for Brett Kavanaugh is set for Saturday at 2:30 pm.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“This is a sad and disgraceful day for America as Senate Republicans continue to prove to be more concerned with advancing a dangerous and unqualified nominee then in fulfilling their obligations to the people and the country. Brett Kavanaugh should be disqualified from serving on the Supreme Court because of his extremist views and record, his partisan performance, his countless lies under oath, and the brave testimony of Dr. Blasey Ford. Relying on an incomplete investigation -- directed by Donald Trump -- for cover doesn’t change a thing. Senate Republicans have worked tirelessly to ignore the millions of constituents calling their offices while refusing to listen to women or treat them as equals. They shouldn’t give a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court to someone who will impose those views on the American people for generations to come.”
