WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Washington Post reported that the the Trump administration foresees the world will have a seven degree increase in temperature by 2100 -- and the administration used that as justification to continue to roll back climate protections, like the clean car standards. According to scientists, this level of temperature increase would be catastrophic for civilization. Still, the analysis from the Trump administration does not call for climate action, and instead surrenders to the whims of big polluters.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"The Trump Administration is suggesting that we can expect catastrophic climate change that will devastate our families and our communities, but that we should also do nothing about it other than accept our fate and continue to allow corporate polluters to destroy our planet.
“Allowing families, homes, and businesses to be threatened by stronger and more devastating superstorms, raging wildfires, and droughts to help a handful of fossil fuel executives make a buck isn’t leadership. Giving up and embracing the apocalypse isn’t leadership -- it is an abdication of duty and a threat to the future of our country.
“Leadership is pursuing climate solutions -- like the clean car standards and the Clean Power Plan -- that can prevent the worst consequences of climate change while growing our economy. The fact is we can turn back the worst of the climate crisis when we organize and work together to implement the solutions that are available now. That is what we are committed to working on, day in and day out, regardless of who is in the White House.”
