Washington, DC -- This morning, as Hurricane Florence bears down on the Southeast, Donald Trump took to Twitter to deny that nearly 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria and claim it’s the fault of the Democrats.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“People across the Southeast are preparing to protect their homes, their lives, and their families from the imminent landfall of a destructive hurricane, yet the president is busy peddling a conspiracy theory denying that nearly 3,000 people died when he failed to do his job after Hurricane Maria. Climate change is fueling larger and stronger storms that are wreaking havoc along our coasts, and our country deserves a leader who will put the health and safety of the public above all else. Instead, we have a person in the White House who is only interested in self-preservation. Donald Trump must focus more on his responsibility to the people and less on making up lies to distract from his failures as a president.”
