Minneapolis, MN-- This week, Sierra Club Senior Organizing Representative Karen Monahan described experiences of domestic abuse by Minnesota Attorney General Candidate and Congressman Keith Ellison. Karen is based in Minnesota and leads the Minnesota Environmental Justice Program for the Sierra Club.
In response, Sierra Club North Star Chapter Director Margaret Levin and Sierra Club President Loren Blackford released the following joint statement:
"The Sierra Club strongly condemns domestic abuse and violence of any kind. Further, we affirm a woman’s right to share her experiences whenever, and however she chooses. We are deeply troubled and disturbed by our colleague Karen Monahan’s descriptions of abuse by Keith Ellison. Everyone should have high expectations for those in office -- and everywhere -- to live and work with integrity, respect, and accountability. Karen is our colleague, our friend, and our partner in fighting for a more equitable, inclusive, and just world, and she, her son, and her family deserve to be treated with respect. Our highest priority is supporting Karen during this very challenging time.”
